About Amy Freeze

Meteorologist.  Ivy League Academic.  Body For Life Champion.  Sports Enthusiast.  Marathoner. Triathlete.  Emmy Award Winner.  Environmental Writer.  Educator.  Mother of Four.     

Amy Freeze is the Chief Meteorologist at FOX Chicago News.  She is one of a few women in the world with a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist accreditation from the American Meteorological Society.  Freeze has Seals of Approval from both the AMS and the National Weather Association. 

Freeze has a Master Degree from University of Pennsylvania in Environmental Science.  Her educational background includes a B.A. in Communications from Brigham Young University, with an emphasis on Broadcast Journalism. She has a B.S. in Geosciences from Mississippi State University, with an emphasis on Severe Weather and Forecasting.  She also has a Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology from MSU.  Freeze also studied foreign politics abroad in both South Africa and Germany.

She is a three-time Emmy winner for Best Weathercaster, Outstanding Host and the weather special “Surviving Severe Weather.”  Beyond forecasting, Freeze has covered movies and entertainment, reported on the Olympic Games in Salt Lake and Atlanta, and was the first female sideline reporter for Major League Soccer.   She currently has the assignment of reporting on-field weather conditions for the Chicago Bears and was featured on Monday Night Football for her “freezing” report of the coldest kickoff ever at Soldier Field in 2008. 

Freeze is an avid runner and has completed five marathons, (CO, IL, NY, PA, and CA) including the Chicago Marathon in 2000.  She’s also scuba certified and has taken a swim with the dozen or so 300 pound sharks that reside at the New Jersey State Aquarium.  Freeze recently took a dip in the Oceanarium at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. 

She was previously with NBC 10 Philadelphia as a Meteorologist and host of NBC 10’s daily live, local show 10!  Freeze has been on the plaza in New York City as a weathercaster for the “Weekend Today” show. 

Prior to joining NBC 10, she worked in Denver, Colorado for at the ABC affiliate in the Channel 7 KMGH weather department. Freeze’s previous experience includes working as the morning meteorologist for KWGN Denver, “WB Today” in Denver where she both provided weather reports and co-hosted the morning news. 

In addition, Freeze spent three years working on the Pacific Coast in Portland with the KPTV’s original local morning news program “Good Day Oregon.”  Freeze got her first full time job in news as general assignment reporter for a local news magazine in Portland called “East Metro Edition.” Her schooling began at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.  After a year of general studies at WSU, Freeze took a cheerleading scholarship at Brigham Young University. It was at BYU on the nightly “KBYU Report,” Freeze learned to shoot, edit, write, and package stories. It was also the scene of her first “weather wall” report where she actually disappeared from the green screen during the weathercast! 

After graduation from BYU, she spent time in Los Angeles, CA at KTLA working with both the “KTLA Morning News” and Marta Waller’s live coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial. 

A member of the Radio and Television News Director Association since 1994, Freeze was chosen to participate in the 1996 RTNDF/RIAS German Journalism Exchange which included study of German politics, the European Union and NATO.  Before leaving Berlin, Freeze produced two documentaries which aired on cable. 

She also studied international politics in Johannesburg during the election of Nelson Mandela.  She has interviewed hundreds of entertainers and athletes – – some of her favorites include Howie Mandel, Ed McMahon, Bette Midler, Denzel Washington, Jon Bon Jovi, Glenn Close, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Dick Clark, Kim Bassinger, Seth Green and William Hurt.  Freeze had a cameo role on the sitcom “Scrubs” in 2005.
